Names Missing From List For Civic Polls, Voters Tell NDTV

Voting in the elections for the re-unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi proved a wild goose chase for many, who failed to find their names in the voters' list today. Others told NDTV that they could not find the polling station allotted to them and alleged mismanagement on part of the authorities. They said they were being directed from one polling station to the other and have spent hours in the process.

Many voters told NDTV that their names have been deleted from the voters' list, even though they have been voting regularly in the assembly and the general elections. One person said his family of eight have been excluded.

Among those who failed to find their name in the list was Delhi Congress president Anil Chaudhary.

"I have been receiving calls from all over Delhi about missing names. Lakhs of people have been removed from the voters' list. The BJP can't win so it is trying to delay its defeat. It did the same by delimiting wards and is doing it now by removing names from the voters' list," he told NDTV.

The BJP's Manoj Tiwari claimed that the names of 450 voters in the city's Subhash Mohalla ward have been deleted from the voters' list because they support the BJP.

"In the Subash Mohalla ward, the names of 450 voters have been deleted from the voters' list because they support the BJP. This is a big conspiracy by the Delhi government. I will complain against this and appeal for cancellation of this polls and re-election," Mr Tiwari told  reporters.

The election for the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi was held today, in which the ruling Aam Aadmi Party is hoping to wrest power from  the BJP, which  is seeking a fourth successive term.

Even though Arvind Kejriwal's AAP won a record 67 of the 70 seats in the 2015 Assembly polls, the BJP retained the civic body two years later, by winning 181 of its 272 seats. AAP was second with 48 and Congress third with 30.

Over 1.45 crore people are eligible to vote in civic polls, in which 1,349 candidates are in fray.

Polling for the 250 wards —which started at 8 am -- concluded at 5:30 pm. The counting of votes will be held on December 7.
